European Union: "Why we have to stand up to Viktor Orban"

TRIBUNE - The two vice-presidents of the European Parliament, Katarina Barley and Othmar Karas, defend the right and the duty, for their institution, to denounce the laws of Member States which they consider contrary to the European treaties which bind them.


Katarina Barley, German MEP and former Federal Minister of Justice in the Merkel government (2018-2019), is a member of the Social Democratic Party.

Othmar Karas, Austrian MEP, is a member of the People's Party (ÖVP, Christian Democrat) and vice-president of the Robert-Schuman Foundation.

Last month, the institutions of the European Union launched an unprecedented exercise of direct democracy by organizing a Conference on the Future of Europe with the active participation of citizens from across the continent, alongside elected representatives.

Meanwhile, the Hungarian Prime Minister financed an advertisement in a dozen national newspapers denouncing the European Union and in particular the European Parliament.

Such a disinformation campaign cannot go unanswered.
