Luis Solimeno

began his activity with

a small boat

and then, together with

his sons Antonio and Luis

, they transformed the small family business into an important business activity dedicated to fishing and industrialization, transforming his company, today

Grupo Solimeno

, into one of the largest fishing companies in the country that

employs more than 850 people

and annually markets more than 30,000 tons of products.

Currently, it has a fleet of

12 ships and has 2 plants on land

in the city of Mar del Plata.

The big jump

"The transformation of our activity

began in 1970,

marketing fishery products," says Antonio Solimeno, current president of the Group, who refers to his beginnings as a fishing vessel owner.

Solimeno recalls that the first boat built in the port of Mar del Plata, Argentina, was a small

coastal boat of 18 meters in length

and that through hard work and sacrifice a second

25-meter ship

was acquired

to enter the world of fishing as shipowners.

Solimeno, 50 years betting on the country

National and export production

“Already in 1976 we began the

construction of our industrial plant

to produce our fishing products and our growth allowed us, in 1979, to export on our own account to countries such as

Brazil, the United States

and the markets of

Asia, the Middle East and Europe

”, he relates.

"As time has passed," he adds, "we have been growing

in fleets of

fishing

vessels

with new technologies, as was the case of jigger vessels for frozen squid fishing on board and freezer trawlers, which already brought the filet made in the same ship, packed and frozen.

In addition, we continue to expand the

fleet of cooling boats

to provide work on land to our plants, ensuring a high quality of our own raw materials.

We currently have

4 tangon vessels

dedicated to exclusive shrimp fishing that are processed, classified and frozen on board, ready for the final consumer or for export ”.

Create added value

In the fishing industry, today Grupo Solimeno is one of the

leading third-generation companies

, developing innovative production ventures and counting on professionals who have a wide range of specialized technological tools and the most modern production systems for frozen products for their own brand, Solimeno.

As of

2003

, in addition, the company decided to make new investments and start with the

Solimeno Mare industrial project

, with the idea of developing products made with added value.

Currently, this plant has an area of 18 thousand square meters to supply both the domestic market and exports, with an

estimated annual production of more than 10 thousand tons

.

Hake fillet, an emblem of the Solimeno brand.

“The quality of these products is excellent because the raw material, to a large extent, comes from our own fleet and is frozen on board, giving it

extra freshness

.

At the same time, we highlight our suppliers who provide us with high quality products and raw materials to achieve synergy in production reflected in

how our customers perceive Solimeno products

”.

Global market and investments

In general, fish production is a sector with a high export percentage.

"Today our company is balanced in

75% of exports

and

25%

to supply the

domestic market

", describes Antonio and adds:

“In this last year and a half, like so many other items, we have suffered a bit from

the hit of the pandemic

, since several of our products end up in

tourist places that were closed

. Let's hope that this situation, with mass vaccination at the global level, changes and we can reintegrate ourselves. What favors us is that people now prioritize natural foods and take better care of their health, and nothing better than a wild fish for a healthy diet. At the local level we notice

changes in consumption habits

reflected in the growth of ready or elaborate meals where people prioritize practicality and time; This helped the growth of our line of breaded and processed products, and now we are adding a line of frozen vegetables with the Solimeno brand in half-kilo bags. We are trying to reach the end customer with our own brand in retail bag formats so that they can distinguish us from competitors ”.

“Regarding the

investment

issue,

we are on several fronts,” he points out. “On the one hand, we are going to build a

40-meter multipurpose fishing vessel

with the latest technology in both fishing and instruments, which will have machinery brought from Europe but in turn will be built in the SPI shipyards in Mar del Plata, where we will give a lot of work to local labor taking advantage of our experience, technical area and engineering. In addition, we are

restoring our flagship Luca Mario

with a new engine change and habitability, together with the Pontine workshop. Finally, and betting on the domestic market, we are putting together a third line of manufactured products to continue growing strong with

our Solimeno brand, ready for the shelf

in retail packaging. For this proposal we have

CIFSA Compañía Frutihortícola

, which provides us with spinach and packages premium quality frozen vegetables like all our products ”.

In difficult times, the company

renews challenges

and not only expands its product line, but also its

investments, development projects and sources of employment.
