Iran warned today (Monday) that it would respond immediately to any threat to its security, after Israel, the United States and Britain warned of the consequences of attacking the tanker off the coast of Oman, in an action they attributed to Tehran.
The Islamic Republic denies any involvement in the UAV attack on the Mercer Street tanker last Friday, in which a British citizen and a Romanian citizen were killed.
The Japanese-owned tanker is operated by the British shipping company Zodiac Maritime, which is partly owned by Israeli businessman Eyal Ofer. Today, the foreign ministries of Britain and Romania summoned the Iranian ambassadors to express their condemnation of the attack and make it clear that they are working together with other countries in favor of an appropriate response.

Iran and Israel have accused each other of attacking each other's vessels in recent months, as part of a naval battle between the two converted enemies revealed earlier this year.
However, the latest incident was the first in which there were casualties, and it threatens to escalate tensions in the region and outwit difficulties in resuming nuclear talks between the powers and Iran.
"Iran will not hesitate to defend its security and its national interests and it will respond immediately and firmly to any possible adventure," said Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Said Khatibzadeh, quoted by official television.
He "deeply regretted the baseless allegations made by the British Foreign Secretary against Iran, which were repeated by the US Secretary of State in the same context and which included contradictory, false and provocative allegations."
