A young California star died of his wounds on Saturday, a week after he and his girlfriend were shot during a movie.

Anthony Brahas, 19, and his girlfriend, Riley Goodrich, 18, watched the horror film "Purge Forever" last Monday in a movie theater in the town of Corona, and were found by workers at the scene at the end of the screening after being shot in the head.

Goodrich's death was determined at the scene, while Brahas, who had about a million followers on Tiktok and other platforms, was rushed to hospital in critical condition.

Police said the murder suspect, Joseph Jimenez, acted alone and there is no indication that he knew the victims or that Brahas' publicity on social media influenced him.

"There was no provocation and the victims were shot without any prior connection," police said last week in the town of Corona, about 80 miles from Los Angeles.

Jimenez, 20, was arrested at his home the day after the shooting, and police found at his home weapons and other items that linked him to the murder scene, including Goodrich's wallet.

Police said less than a dozen tickets were sold for the screening of the film, the latest in a "purge" series depicting a dystopian society that once a year receives permission from the government to do whatever it pleases, including murders.

None of the other spectators in the hall noticed Jimenez's shooting, which may have been swallowed up in the film's noise.

During his interrogation, Jimenez, who purchased a ticket for the film, claimed that he "heard voices in his head," possibly in an attempt to claim insanity.

On Friday he appeared in court, after being charged with the murder of Godrich and the attempted murder of Brahas.

The prosecution will add another murder clause to it after the young man's death has been determined, and it may seek to sentence him to death.

He did not plead guilty to the offenses attributed to him and the filing of the indictment against him was denied.

During the hearing, the girl's father, David Goodrich, confronted the shooter.

"Look at me, look at me, that was my daughter," the father told him in a broken voice, supported by his friend.
