Natalia Solovyova, Deputy Director of the Institute of History and Material Culture of the Russian Academy of Sciences, announced that experts from the institute, based in Saint Petersburg, will participate in the joint Syrian-Russian mission tasked with the task of rehabilitating ancient monuments in Syria, especially those damaged by terrorism.
Solovyova said, in a statement to TASS, that a joint Syrian-Russian mission is currently being prepared, which is the third of its kind to restore historical archaeological sites in Syria. .
Solovyova said that international missions organized by the institute during 2021 began jointly with Syrian colleagues to implement the project to rehabilitate and preserve the first churches in Syria, noting that the experts examined medieval churches in Deir al-Salib village, north of Hama governorate, and Qasr Ibn Wardan Cathedral.
Solovyova indicated that the mission found three old churches that were subjected to acts of vandalism, adding that the mission of the mission is to prepare the necessary documents for the rehabilitation of damaged archaeological sites.
The Institute of History and Material Culture of the Russian Academy of Sciences is one of the leading Russian organizations in the use of digital technologies to preserve archaeological heritage. It has also created the most complete and accurate three-dimensional digital model of the ancient city of Palmyra, which was handed over to the General Directorate of Antiquities and Museums in Syria and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization “UNESCO” to organize further works and restoration.
