The issue of speed limits, whether on the highway or in built-up areas, continues to divide the nation.

The French capital Paris is now showing how it can go.

Paris - The speed limit 30 in downtown Paris has been in effect since the beginning of August. This should make the French capital safer, quieter and more environmentally conscious. This means that speeds of over 30 km / h are only allowed on important access roads or the famous Champs-Élysée. For the Parisians, the change should be bearable, as, according to ADAC, a speed limit of 30 km / h has already applied to 60 percent of the road network. At the same time, the high volume of traffic often prevented faster progress.

Paris is thus continuing a green course that began with the introduction of Social Democrat Anne Hidalgo as Mayor in 2016.

During her tenure, many streets were made smaller for the benefit of cyclists and pedestrians.

At the same time, it is planned to outsource a good 60,000 of the approximately 140,000 street parking spaces to areas outside the city.

At the same time, parking prices are to rise, busy streets are to be greened and climate change is to be countered with new city maps.

The plans also cause criticism from the population.

Many people from the suburbs rely on their cars to get to work.

For them, the new regulations lead to fewer parking spaces, more traffic jams and rising costs, also thanks to high fuel prices.

Tempo 30: What is the city of Munich doing?

In Munich, similar plans initially met with little approval. At the beginning of the year, a proposal by the Greens to make Munich a model city for a speed limit of 30 was rejected. Although opinions have now changed in individual district committees, it is not yet possible to foresee when and whether similar projects will be implemented for the Bavarian capital. Munich has the prerequisites for this: In the Bavarian capital, Tempo 30 already applies to almost 80 percent of the road network, in Paris it was only 60 percent.

Costs for renovation and reorganization can be saved by reducing the number of traffic signs and reducing bureaucracy by reversing the burden of proof, as the Munich Greens told

.

Reversing the burden of proof means that in the case of a speed limit of 30, the authorities would have to explain why a higher speed limit should apply to certain routes instead of the other way around.

Tempo 30: Other German cities are already implementing speed limits

Other German cities are already further in their plans.

As part of a pilot project, Frankfurt and Freiburg are planning to run at 30 km / h in the future. "The capacity for traffic is not restricted by 30 km / h; Augsburg, Hanover and Ulm belong.

In Stuttgart, a speed limit of 40 has already been implemented thanks to the clean air plan for the city that is plagued by fine dust.
