It was 4 in the morning and Mayelin García López (28) had finished her work shift in Punta Cana, a resto-bar in the Dominican community.

On the way home, they did not get to do ten blocks in the car of their companions when, without anyone being able to foresee it, a Renault 18 crossed a red light and crashed them, in Flores.

He killed her on the spot.

The driver escaped and turned himself in hours later.

They report that he was drunk

.

The victim was a Dominican migrant who arrived in Buenos Aires 12 years ago.

He traveled with his mother and a friend to study and start a new life in the country.

It was in Argentina that he married and had three children.

She was already the mother of a teenager who decided to stay in the Caribbean country.

Mayelin cleaned and served customers.

He served them beer or the typical dishes offered in this bar that other members of the community settled in Buenos Aires tend to frequent.

The night passed between music, card games and food in a small place on 2500 Yerbal street. When it closed, some decided to continue elsewhere, but "Mayi" went home.

Samuel, the owner of Punta Cana, used to drive employees home for safety reasons.

He was behind the wheel of the white Chevrolet Onix.

Mayelin was in the front passenger seat and Dionisio Martínez Fidel (36), another of the employees, was sitting in the back.

They had barely traveled ten blocks (they had 12 to go to the victim's house).

The Onix was going through Juan Bautista Alberdi in the direction of Lacarra and at the corner with San Pedrito another car passed the red light and rammed them squarely into the door where Mayelin was going.

The Chevrolet overturned and ended up on the sidewalk, almost inside a real estate.

The other vehicle was driven by Maximiliano Fernando Ríos (23), a native of Lomas de Zamora.

He was driving a burgundy Renault 18 and some witnesses noted that he "

looked drunk

."

This is how one of the cars involved in the fatal crash was left.

The young man got out of the car with difficulty, which began to

catch fire

.

While Dionisio and Samuel left the Onix and tried to get Mayelin out, Ríos looked at the scene and walked away.

Yomi is a friend of Mayelin, they came to the country together and she tells

Clarín

that they were like cousins.

"I was with her at the bar, but she went home and we were in another car. We called the husband and the mother, we were all ten blocks apart, but she was already injured and the other man had escaped" , he recounted.

Mayelin had

four children

: three lived with her and her husband, Fabio Tolentino (31).

They are only 2, 4 and 9 years old.

Until this afternoon they still had not been able to explain what happened.

Mayelin García López, the fatal victim.

Neither Dionisio nor Samuel, the driver, were seriously injured.

They were treated for minor blows but there was nothing for Mayelin to do when the SAME ambulance arrived.

"Mayi was a very quiet woman, she worked as much as she could. If they called her to do some hairdressing, she would go right away. She took her children to the square, took care of them, played a lot with them. What can I tell you about her ?

It's terrible what happened to him

, "Yomi described her.

"He crossed in red because I never saw him," Samuel told

TN

.

While they removed the cars from the sidewalk and controlled the flames, the friends of the victims improvised a court on San Pedrito Avenue to ask that they stop the driver of the other vehicle.

The crash scene, with 4 cars involved.

Finally, around 9 in the morning, the person responsible for the incident turned himself in at Police Station 8C, in Villa Lugano.

He admitted being the driver of the Renault 18 and was arrested for "

wrongful death

".

As he suffered injuries from the impact, he had to be referred to a health center for medical attention.

The Justice ordered a compulsive blood and urine sample from the defendant to analyze blood alcohol levels, the results of which were expected.

Personnel from the Neighborhood Police Station 7C of the Police of the City of Buenos Aires intervened and the investigation was left in the hands of the National Criminal and Correctional Prosecutor's Office No. 16.

Mayelin García López had come to the country from the Dominican Republic 12 years ago.
