Kiev / Minsk - A well-known Belarusian activist was found dead in neighboring Ukraine *. The case is a cause for concern: Vitaly Schischow was discovered "hanged" in a park near his apartment in the Ukrainian capital of Kiev, the Kiev police said on Tuesday. The police announced that they would investigate in all directions. Possible indications that it could be a "murder disguised as a suicide" will also be investigated.

Schischow had suddenly disappeared the day before - he had not returned from a jog on Monday morning.

The non-governmental organization Vyasna said, citing friends of Schischow, that the activist had recently been followed by "strangers" while jogging.

According to media reports, Schischow also complained about feeling persecuted.

Personal items and Schischow's mobile phone were found near the body, it said.

Lukashenko's Belarus: Activist Schischow found dead - he helped refugees in Ukraine

From Kiev, Schischow headed the “Belarusian House of Ukraine” organization in the Telegram messenger service - it helps Belarusians in exile to arrive in Ukraine. Shishov's organization "Belarusian House of Ukraine" spoke of a "planned operation" by the Belarusian leadership to "eliminate" a critic of the government. It is obvious that the Belarusian secret services had killed Shishov, who was a "real threat to the regime" in Minsk.

Many Belarusians are fleeing to neighboring Ukraine, Poland or Lithuania in the face of repression in their home country.

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, who has ruled for almost three decades, was declared the winner of the presidential election a year ago despite massive allegations of fraud.

Mass protests of historic proportions followed in Belarus - which were brutally suppressed by the security forces.
