Considerations to use the Olympic ski stadium in Garmisch-Partenkirchen more for tourism have been around for a long time: Now robotics expert Sami Haddadin has presented a new vision: a virtual world of experience that takes up the themes of the holiday destination, be it sport, nature or Michael The End.

Bavaria's Digital Minister Judith Gerlach was impressed.

Garmisch-Partenkirchen

- “It's good that we have put on sneakers,” said Judith Gerlach while visiting the ski jump in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

In fact, a sporty outfit was not wrong at the appointment, after all, ski jumping hill boss Thomas Scheck led the group of visitors around the Free State's digital minister up the steep stairs to the starting bar.

But up there it was not just about high-profile photos, but about an extraordinary proposal with which the holiday and winter sports resort could upgrade its Olympic ski stadium as a sight and set an important piece of the puzzle in the course of digitization.

Responsible for geriatrics project

At the head of the hill, Prof. Dr. Sami Haddadin, who is largely driving the geriatronics project in the district, proposed a concept for a high-tech adventure world that, in his opinion, would be in good hands in the historic and listed stadium complex. The idea that fully exploits the possibilities of digital technology was developed by the expert in robotics and artificial intelligence at the Technical University of Munich together with doctoral students. Mayor Elisabeth Koch (CSU) gave the impetus and asked her party colleague Gerlach for support.

“The place is fantastic. We have unique potential, ”enthused Haddadin. The idea of putting the sports facility, which is currently being extensively renovated for many millions of euros, into the spotlight as a tourist magnet is not new. But Haddadin wants to break new ground. His motto: tradition meets the medium of modernity. That goes down - especially with the Christian Socialists, who have internalized the party slogan “Laptop and Lederhose”.

The focus of the vision should be terminals at which one can experience all sorts of things that are connected to Garmisch-Partenkirchen with the help of data glasses and control devices. The scientist, who enjoys a high reputation in Bavarian politics, thinks about live drone flights over the stadium or recorded jumps from the ski jump. According to him, other topics could also be imagined, for example a virtual hike to the Zugspitze or through the Partnach Gorge - ideally on a treadmill in order to convey these experiences of nature as realistically as possible. Even the exceptional writer Michael Ende, the famous son of the market town, and his unforgettable masterpieces of youth literature are ideal as material in Haddadin's opinion. How about a virtual sightseeing flight on Fuchur, the lucky dragon from the "Neverending Story"?

Technically, the head of the chair for robotics and system intelligence sees no problems.

“Everything is possible,” he is convinced.

The necessary equipment can be bought.

The only question is: how much does something like this cost?

“A few million,” Haddadin estimates when asked.

But you could build the whole thing up step by step.

"That's a great idea"

In any case, the minister was enthusiastic. “That's a great idea,” said Gerlach in an initial reaction. "That could be a great attraction." Your house will review the plans. Basically, the district is setting the right course: “Citizens are now used to simply booking a trip online or ordering a sweater with one click. The state and the municipalities also have to follow suit. I am therefore very pleased that Garmisch-Partenkirchen is digitally rolling up its sleeves and wants to bring even more offers online for the citizens and the many guests of the town. "

It sounds similar to the town hall chief Koch: “In terms of digitization, I think we are on the right track. However, the end is far from in sight. ”Many improvements still need to be implemented at all levels. According to Koch, this also includes the digital upgrading of the Olympic ski stadium.
