German is the fourth political appointment that Lapid has announced since taking office as foreign minister, as part of a limited quota of 11 political appointments reserved for a minister under the law.
He has decided to appoint former Minister Assaf Zamir as consul in New York, former MK Ronen Hoffman as ambassador to Canada, and Amir Haik as ambassador to the United Arab Emirates. At the UN, Gilad Ardan sought to end his position in Washington.
According to a report in Haaretz, Lapid first examined the possibility that German would replace the Israeli ambassador to London, Tzipi Hotovli, which is a political appointment of the previous government.
However, Hotovli's appointment is for three years, leaving her with two more years in office, and shortening her tenure would have run into legal difficulties.
In the end, Lapid decided to appoint German to Paris.
