New York City will require proof of vaccination for indoor recreational activities such as restaurants and gyms, becoming the first major city in the United States to take this action.
Mayor Bill de Blasio made the announcement at a news conference Tuesday morning.
The decision will be implemented at the end of this month during a transition period before it is fully implemented in mid-September.
"It is time for people to see that vaccines are literally necessary to live a good, full and healthy life," said the mayor.
This move is De Blasio's latest attempt to encourage more people to get vaccinated against COVID-19.
Last week, it offered a $ 100 incentive for anyone who gets immunized at vaccination sites run by the city government.
