On our own behalf: Security incident in the community software "Talk"

2021-08-03T16:54:47.189Z

There was a security gap in the software that SPIEGEL uses for its community area. What our users need to know now.

Dear user of our community area,

On Monday, August 2nd, there was a security incident in the community software "Talk", which we also use.

We were able to close the security gap after a few hours.

Nevertheless, it cannot be ruled out that attackers have stolen e-mail addresses and user names.

Unfortunately, due to the nature of the attack, it is not possible to reconstruct who is affected in detail.

In the interest of the greatest possible security, SPIEGEL has therefore decided to reassign all user names at random, so that no connections can be made between forum posts, previous user names and e-mail addresses and the pseudonymity of our forum is preserved.

Your community name has therefore been changed automatically - but you can change it again in the settings as you wish.

Your contributions in the forum will of course be retained.

(If you want, you can also use the "Erase All" function to remove them.)

If you have any questions, you can contact our team at community@spiegel.de, for data protection our data protection officer at datenschutz@spiegelgruppe.de.

We regret the incident with our community software and would be happy if you stayed with us.
