Reactions to Simon Bales' Retirement from Reuters
The competitions at the Olympic Gymnasium in Tokyo, came to an end today (Tuesday) and we could not expect a dramatic end to it. After retiring from competitions one after another and losing her four Olympic titles in Mario 2016, Simon Bailes is here again. The American phenomenon has risen to the last individual exercise in women in order to achieve a medal on the beam.
Bales was the focus of attention after her retirement during the team competition. The expectation was that if she returned, it would be for the ground exercise held yesterday and considered her strongest, and after she announced her retirement from it as well, few believed she would compete again. But yesterday came the good news.
The beam exercise is considered to be Bales' two most "weak" (after graded parallels). Although she won it at the last world championship held in 2019, in Rio de Janeiro she was content with a bronze. In the qualifiers she achieved the seventh score in nature only, 14: 066.
The favorite to win is actually the 16-year-old Chinese, Guan Chenchen, who received a score of 14.933 in the qualifiers, after a very high-difficulty exercise.
Her compatriot, Tang Shijing, is also a senior candidate for the medal.
