Wörthsee - 13 degrees and continuous rain - the hot weather for last Sunday was anything but suitable for triathlons.

"On Saturday evening I went to bed with a stomachache," says Walter Neumann, event manager of the Wörthsee Triathlon in an interview with the Starnberger Merkur.

“In the end, however, Petrus meant well with us.” The 100 or so Wörthsee residents who took part in the community's first garage flea market also benefited from this.

Just in time for the start of the triathlon at 8.35 a.m., the continuous rain stopped. The sun was still hiding behind thick clouds, but according to Neumann, the conditions were still perfect for the all-around competition. He had around 600 triathlon registrations. “Some didn't come due to the weather,” says Neumann. In the end 500 participants started, 490 finished. As every year, sports enthusiasts could choose either the Olympic distance with a 1.5-kilometer swim course, a 40-kilometer bicycle route and a ten-kilometer running route, or the popular triathlon. The second variant is significantly shorter with 600 meters of swimming, 20 kilometers of cycling and six kilometers of running. Even so, the majority of athletes (276) chose the tougher version. With a time of one hour and 59 minutes, the 21-year-old Marchelo Kunzelmann-Loza was the first to cross the finish line. But not only young triathletes took part in the sporting event at Wörthsee. “The oldest athlete was 79 years old,” says Neumann. "That is quite an achievement."

Despite the poor road conditions, there were only two falls while cycling, both downhill on the route towards Hechendorf.

“Thank goodness nothing bad happened there.

There was no need for medical help, ”says Neumann.

The event manager and his team had asked the participants to be careful in advance because of the heavy rainfall last night.

Due to the corona, the Wörthsee Triathlon took place on a much smaller scale.

"The greeting, the moderation at the finish line and the award ceremony had to be canceled," says Neumann.

In addition, the athletes had to do without the majority of the spectators, "those who were there, however, cheered loudly".

Most triathletes were happy that the sporting event could take place after the cancellation last year, despite the restrictions.

“You could see the enthusiasm in the faces of the athletes,” says Neumann.

After the triathlon, around 100 citizens offered their treasures at the municipality's first garage sale. "It was a coincidence that the flea market and the triathlon took place on the same day," says municipal officer Juliane Seeliger-von Gemmingen. “We assumed for a long time that the sporting event could not take place.” From 12 noon to 6 pm, flea market lovers strolled through Wörthsee and the districts of the community. “A collector was even standing in front of our garage at half past nine,” says Gertrud Schamberger from Etterschlag. “We weren't even finished with the assembly.” She and her husband used to go to flea markets a lot. “You can sell things that you don't need yourself.” Last Sunday, Schamberger's garage was filled with clothes, flower pots, picture frames, wooden figures and dishes."We are satisfied with the result," says the Ettenschlagerin. "In the end, we didn't get that much money, but that wasn't the point."

Since the garage flea market was able to score with locals and visitors, the community wants to organize a repeat date.
