(CNN) -

Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, launched a mentoring plan on her 40th birthday to help women return to the workforce after the pandemic.

The scheme, called 40x40, is "a global effort that encourages people around the world to commit to dedicating 40 minutes of their time to help women return to work."

This is explained in a press release from the Archewell Foundation, founded by Meghan and her husband, Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex.

"As I reflect on my 40th birthday and the many things I am grateful for, it amazes me that time is one of our greatest and most essential gifts," Meghan wrote in a message on Archewell's website.

"In the last two years, and in large part due to the COVID-19 pandemic, tens of millions of women around the world have left the workforce, including more than two million women in the US," he noted .

“Many of these women are also bearing the brunt of the crisis when it comes to unpaid work, including schooling and caring for family members.

And the latest research shows that fewer women than men will get back to work as we recover from the pandemic, "the Duchess wrote.
