A team of researchers at the Institute of Biomedical Research in Barcelona, Spain, has created a computer system that can identify genetic mutations that affect the growth of cancerous tumors.

According to the Science Daily website, which specializes in scientific research, the researchers confirmed that this system can help doctors determine the best treatment methods to deal with each cancer patient, considering that cancerous tumors “are the product of a group of genetic mutations,” explaining that not all of these mutations are linked to the development of the tumor inside the body. “.

The researchers indicated that the new system has already reached 185 computer models to identify genetic mutations, as it succeeded, for example, in identifying all genetic mutations of the gene called (EGFR), which leads to the formation of some types of lung cancer, as well as genetic mutations that lead to the growth of some Types of brain cancer.

The researchers considered that this study provides a map of the major mutations of cancerous tumors because it contains valuable information for both cancer research and personalized medicine research and treatment decision-making mechanisms.

Researcher Nuria Lopez-Begas indicated that the system can evaluate all genetic mutations in the tumor and identify the mutations that lead to the development of a cancerous tumor, stressing that these data can help in understanding the way tumors develop at the molecular level and make the correct therapeutic decisions that suit each disease case separately.
