The Centre for Food Safety of the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department announced today (4th) that a sample of pre-packaged fruit salad was taken from the P18 store in Telford Plaza Phase 1 of Kowloon Bay for testing through the regular food monitoring programme.
The results showed that the presence of Salmonella in 25 grams of food samples exceeded the “Guidelines on Microbiological Content of Foods” that cannot detect Salmonella in 25 grams of ready-to-eat food samples.

The CFS has notified the restaurant involved and the food factory that produced the fruit salad that the above-mentioned unqualified test results, and instructed them to stop selling the relevant food immediately.
The centre has also dispatched staff to inspect the relevant restaurants and food factories, provide food safety and hygiene education to the responsible persons and employees, and request the food factories to inspect and improve the production process and carry out thorough cleaning and disinfection.
According to Article 54 of the Public Health and Municipal Services Ordinance (Chapter 132), all food sold in Hong Kong, whether imported or locally produced, must be fit for human consumption.

The spokesperson said that the center received a notification from the European Commission’s Food and Feed Rapid Warning System, stating that the locust bean gum used in the above-mentioned products was found to contain the pesticide ethylene oxide banned by the EU.
Information from the early warning system showed that the affected products had been imported into Hong Kong. Upon learning of the incident, the center immediately contacted the relevant local importers to follow up. Initial investigations revealed that the importer Unigra' SRL had imported the affected batches of the relevant products.
In addition, the center followed up the earlier announcement that the locust bean gum used in the stabilizer imported from France may contain ethylene oxide. It learned that a pre-packaged ice cream with various flavors had been used in the affected stabilizer and appealed to the public not to consume it.
