The tragic accident, the big dream and the bronze win: Britain rejoices over 13-year-old Sky Brown

At just 13, the skater became the youngest medalist in British history: "My parents feared the pressure on me would be too great."

The British are excited ("she's kind of a unicorn"), Hamilton and Tony Hawk are cheering and what has that got to do with star dancers?

No less than 46 Olympic medals have been picked up by the British delegation so far at the Tokyo Olympics with only five countries (China, the United States, Japan, Australia and Russia) above it in the medal table and it seems that this is not the end for the British.

But with all due respect to those athletes who have become Olympic medalists in recent days, in the UK they are mostly engaged in one medalist.

Her name is Sky Brown, who at the age of 13 became the youngest medalist in British history, after picking up the bronze medal at the Skateboard Park competition in Tokyo.

Brown, who shared the podium with gold-winning 19-year-old Sakura Yosuzumi and 12-year-old silver-plated Hiroki Kokuna, was born and raised in Japan but chose to represent Britain because of her father's origins.

"My parents were worried that the pressure on me at the Olympics would be too great," she revealed in an interview.

"But then an offer came from the UK that could not be refused - they asked me to just come, without pressure, to enjoy and make a living. They reassured my parents and I kept begging. Luckily, it worked. Everything worked out in the end, and I'm happy I won the medal." .

"I'm really happy, it's not obvious I'm here on the podium with my girlfriends, I'm grateful," she added. And both for my parents, so it's a lot of fun to be here with this medal. "

Brown talked about one of the hardest moments in her short life, about a year ago in May 2020, when she crashed while trying to jump between ramps, and was evacuated to hospital unconscious, with cracks in her skull. "She's lucky she's still alive," her father said after the accident. "I remember after it happened, both Mom and Dad wanted me to stop," she recalled. "The accident affected them a lot more than me, because I don't remember anything. They were very scared and cried every day, but for me skateboarding is a way of life, so I put it, it's just my life."

"I think the message from this case is that you can definitely fall, but you can also get up," Brown added.

"Bad things happen, but they are usually accompanied by good things as well. They say that what does not kill hardens, right? I like to set an example for others and others. It makes me feel very proud, more than winning a medal. Anyway, the accident put me in proportions; "I do not know what I want to do when I grow up, but I do know that I want to sing and dance more, engage in other sports and travel the world."

Aside from skating, Brown does do another sport - she wakes up almost every day at 5 a.m. to go surfing.

She already has more than a million followers on Instagram and has previously won the statement version of the "Dancing with the Stars" program.

She claims she does not have a skateboard coach, and that she learned all the exercises on her own, through watching videos on YouTube.

It paid off hugely for her, having won quite a few youth competitions around the world and after becoming the youngest athlete ever to represent the Nike company when she was chosen to lead a campaign alongside Serena Williams, Simon Bales and others.

In the UK, of course, the wonder girl is overjoyed when one of the greatest racing customs of all time, Lewis Hamilton, shared with his followers the news of her bronze win, which even before the competition, Tony Hawk, one of the greatest skaters of all time, complimented her: "She's just amazing, for me "In a kind of unicorn. She can definitely be the greatest skater of all time."

"I'm 49 and Brown, at 13, has made me a proud woman," tweeted British author Ray Earl.

"She made me scream, rave and want to start riding a skateboard. Amazing."

"Seeing Brown win a medal at the Olympics made me happy and put a huge smile on my face," tweeted former footballer Trevor Sinclair.

"What a great star!".

"What amazing abilities, just wow," tweeted British racing driver Charlie Martin.
