Spaniard Alberto Ginés made history at the Tokyo Olympics as the first climbing gold medalist.
The men's combined final came to a dramatic denouement at Aomi Urban Sports Park on Thursday, as podium positions were swapped throughout the main event.
Ginés, 18, who started the competition with a victory in the speed test, finished with 28 points.
The American Nathaniel Coleman took silver with 30, while the Austrian Jakob Schubert, the only climber to overcome the main wall, took a dramatic bronze on the last climb of the day to finish with 35 points.
The climbers obtained points in three events: speed, bouldering and lead, which were multiplied to obtain a final score.

Ginés, the youngest Olympic medalist in history, said having his "head in place" was the key to his success.
"During the past year, my head has not worked very well, since the beginning [of] the season, and I have been working with a specialist, and I think that now I can control (my nerves) a little more," Ginés told journalists.
