Whatever happens until Sunday’s closing ceremony, the Tokyo Olympics will not be remembered as a particularly impressive landmark for American sports.
The Americans are lagging behind China in the gold medal table, and even in athletics competitions the achievements of the world's greatest sports power are not good enough.
Further proof of this came today (Thursday).
It started when Grant Holloway, the favorite to win the gold in the 100-meter hurdles, was surprised by the Jamaican parchment Hansel and settled for the silver medal, and continued when the 4x100 relay team was left out of the final - a real sensation given that the Americans dominated for years. 15 of the last 18 gold medals.
The team made up of some of the fastest runners in the world including Tribune Bromel, Fred Carly and Ronny Baker, finished only eighth overall in the qualifiers with a result of 38.10 seconds.

The weak result drew criticism from home, and the attack was headed by none other than the legendary Carl Lewis.
"The American Apostles team made all the mistakes possible," tweeted Lewis, who has twice won Olympic gold with the United States and three times at the Apostles World Championships.
"Moving the cane was wrong, the runners ran with the right legs, and obviously the team had no leadership. It's a big embarrassment. It's unthinkable that an American team would look worse than the kids I coach in high school."
Despite the disappointments, the United States still leads the overall medal table in Tokyo (85).
Even in athletics the Americans are still ranked first with 4 gold medals and 19 medals in total.
