CSU also wants money for corona tests in the future - Greens warn of pandemic "blind flight"

The debate about the end of free corona tests is causing a stir.

Green politician Janosch Dahmen is now criticizing.

Berlin - The debate about the end of the free corona rapid tests * continues to boil.

Now Green health politician Janosch Dahmen has spoken out - and has spoken out in favor of an unlimited free trial offer.

“We have only just learned, in the third wave, how important tests are,” he said on Thursday in the ARD “Morgenmagazin”.

In the Federal Republic of Germany, every citizen can still be tested for the corona virus at no cost.

Federal Minister of Health Jens Spahn (CDU) wants to change that.

On Tuesday, his ministry proposed an end to the free corona rapid tests for mid-October.

Making tests now for a fee is not only “unfair”, but “especially bad because it puts us in another blind flight in the pandemic - and we should definitely avoid that,” says Dahmen.

Corona tests could soon cost something - not with the green one

For the Green politician, the discussion comes “at the completely wrong time”.

Over 30 million people are still unvaccinated, so it is not about individuals, but large parts of the population.

The speed of the vaccination campaign dictates “when we can say that testing takes a back seat,” he emphasized.

Unfortunately, efforts have stalled at the moment.

"If we do not significantly increase the vaccination rate, we will still need testing in the foreseeable future - and free of charge," says Dahmen with conviction.

However, it is correct to make a distinction between those who have been vaccinated and those who have been tested - “if we assume that there is a risk”.

Nevertheless, restrictions for unvaccinated people should only exist if the burden on the health system were so great that otherwise all restrictions would have to be accepted.

CSU politician Holetschek calls for the end of free corona rapid tests - without naming the time

The chairman of the conference of health ministers, in turn, Bavaria's head of department Klaus Holetschek (CSU), advocates an end to the free corona rapid tests - but does not want to name a specific time.

"I support the proposal of the Federal Ministry of Health to make corona rapid tests chargeable for a certain target group at the given time," said Holetschek of the German Press Agency in Munich.

However, he emphasized: "The exact point in time will still have to be discussed at the federal-state level in the conference of health ministers."

"If citizens had a foreseeable chance of receiving a vaccination offer or even turned down an offer themselves, they should no longer be able to free themselves at the expense of the solidarity community," argues Holetschek. However, nobody should still have to pay for a test who cannot be vaccinated for medical reasons or who are suspected of being corona. Nobody should be left at the expense through no fault of their own.
