 died at dawn this Thursday in an ATV accident during his vacation in Portugal.

, 18, lost his life in the town of Troia, near Lisbon, where the former Chelsea midfielder bought a house a few years ago.

The local channel 

TVI24

reported that the tragedy occurred around two in the morning when

the quad bike fell on top of the young man

and his body had to be rescued by firefighters.

They are investigated in what circumstances the accident occurred.

Emilio's Instagram account, where he had recently published images from Portugal, was deactivated in the last hours. 

Chelsea, the club in which Ballack was active between 2006 and 2010, posted a message of condolence on their networks: "Everyone associated with Chelsea is shocked and saddened ... All our thoughts are with his father Michael and his family in this sad moment. "

has two other children

with his ex-wife Simone Lambe, whom he married in 2008 after a long courtship: Louis (19) and Jordi (16).

Ballack, one of the leading exponents of the modern era of German football, retired in October 2012 at the age of 36.

His last club was Bayern Leverkusen, but that was not the team with which he celebrated titles in his country: he won three Bundesligas with Bayern Munich and one with Kaiserslaurten, as well as three German Cups and a German League Cup. , all with Bayern.
