How the federal election will end in a few weeks is still open.
One thing is clear: after 16 years, Angela Merkel will no longer be Federal Chancellor.
While the election campaign is just getting underway, the majority of Germans look back on the last 16 years with Merkel as positive.
This was the result of a representative survey of 1,312 respondents from Infratest dimap for the ARD Germany trend from Monday to Wednesday of this week.
Formative events of her time as one of the most powerful women in Europe were the euro crisis, dealing with climate protection, the nuclear phase-out after the disaster in Fukushima, the refugee issue and now the pandemic.
When asked whether or not Angela Merkel has been a good chancellor over the past 16 years, three quarters of German citizens (75 percent) drew a positive balance.
One in five (20 percent) said that all in all Merkel was not a good chancellor.
A clear majority of those entitled to vote consider the Chancellor to be competent (78 percent), strong leadership (77 percent) and credible (71 percent) at the end of her term of office.
Seven out of ten respondents (69 percent) also consider them likeable.
