The prickly pear “Aloe Vera” is one of the famous and economically viable agricultural crops for its owners in the Salamiyah area in the eastern countryside of Hama, where its producers work on picking it these days so that it can be disposed of in the markets and benefit from its proceeds by supporting them living and materially.
In statements to SANA reporter Ben Ali Maqsoud, owner of a prickly pear orchard, harvesting operations began at the beginning of this month, as this fruit has become ripe and producers are waiting for it in such a period annually, pointing out that the process of harvesting is done manually or through special picking machines.
He explained that the prickly pear plant is widely spread in dry and semi-desert areas, where its owners work on picking it and marketing it through local markets in a peaceful area from the producer to the consumer directly, stressing that this fruit achieves abundant financial returns for many families.
The farmer Ali Al-Yazji pointed out that the prickly pear plant grows automatically without the need for irrigation, care and agricultural service, and suits the nature and climate of a peaceful area, which is characterized by its dry air, which makes it an agricultural crop with added productive value without any costs or burdens that producers may bear. It tastes good and contains important and healthy nutrients and is in great demand in the markets.
The engineer, Mervat Moussa, working in a peaceful extension, urged farmers to expand their prickly pear farms because it is one of the agriculturally feasible summer crops and has the ability to adapt to various climatic conditions and resist drought and lack of rain and its fruits are expensive. Around the fields and orchards, where it is a protective fence against any encroachment.
