The United States Department of State announces new actions to combat corruption and strengthen democracy in Central America, launching an additional visa restriction for corrupt and undemocratic actors in Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the State Department indicated that the new visa restriction policy will affect “officials and other people who are believed to be responsible or complicit in undermining democracy and the rule of law, including those who attempt against the integrity and independence of the judicial sector and anti-corruption prosecutors ”.
The measure would be extended to the families of those indicated.
The statement adds that "with these restrictions we are sending a clear message that those who undermine democracy or the rule of law in Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador are not welcome in the United States."
The Secretary of State of the United States, Antony Blinken added that the measure is part of the plan to attack the root causes of the migration of Central Americans to the United States.
