More than once, the cameras of the official broadcast of the Olympic Games discovered a man weaving in one of the stands of the Tokyo Aquatic Center.

It was Tom Daley, already hoarding a gold medal and watching his teammates perform as he methodically wiggled a crochet hook.

After several days of activity, Daley finished his job, which he intends to use for charitable purposes.

Needles are not a novelty in the life of Daley, who on Monday of last week won the title in the ornamental jumping event in the specialty of synchronized jumps on the 10-meter platform with his partner Matty Lee.

The 27-year-old Briton said that he had "a love for knitting, crocheting and everything related to sewing" and explained that these activities allowed him to combat stress.

Through his Instagram account, Daley said that when he arrived in Tokyo he had proposed to make a design that would allow him to remember this Olympic participation.

This is how the sweater project he was working on came about when the television broadcast stopped on him in the days after his Olympic consecration.

“On the back, I chose a classic Great Britain Olympic Team logo, the shoulders have a flag and GBR.

For the front, I wanted it to be simple and did my best to embroider 'Tokyo' in Japanese, ”the Plymouth-born athlete detailed.

The work is admirable.

From the repercussion that his fabric generated, the British took the opportunity to give it an extra spin for charitable purposes.

“Since my tissue page is gaining momentum, I wanted to take the opportunity to try and raise some money for the Brain Tumor Charity (an NGO that funds brain tumor research) in memory of my dad.

Any donation will be greatly appreciated, ”he explained.

His jumping in the pool at the Tokyo Aquatic Center and his knitting habit were not the only reasons why Daley gained notoriety at these Olympics, as he was also one of the athletes who openly claimed his sexual choice.

“I am proud to say that I am gay and an Olympic champion.

I feel very empowered because when I was younger I thought I was never going to be anything or achieve anything because of the way I was.

And being an Olympic champion now only shows that you can achieve anything, "he reflected after winning the title with Matty Lee.

The jumper had made his homosexuality public on December 2, 2013 in a video in which he said that he had a relationship with a man to "put an end to rumors and speculation" about his private life.

Two years later, she announced her engagement to American film director and producer Dustin Lance Black, with whom she later married and with whom she has a son.
