A huge waterspout recently swirled over Lake Constance.

Are popular bathing lakes such as Tegernsee, Chiemsee and Starnberger See in Bavaria at risk?

A tornado expert explains.

Munich - Two gigantic waterspouts on Lake Constance * recently caused a stir.

Fortunately, the tornadoes * over the water did not cause any damage - but the monsters in the sky still caused concern.

Some Bavarian bathers will also have felt queasy when looking at the spectacular shots of the Lake Constance tornadoes.

After all, there are some large bathing lakes in Upper Bavaria.

Is such a natural phenomenon also conceivable at Chiemsee, Tegernsee or Starnberger See?

In any case, the current weather forecasts do not bode well at the moment.

Tornado alarm also at popular bathing lakes in Bavaria?

Weather expert warns for late summer

One who should know is Andreas Friedrich from the German Weather Service (DWD). As a tornado officer, he has already commented on the weather spectacle on Lake Constance - and also has

*. “Something like this has happened again and again in the past,” says Friedrich. However, there would have been no massive damage. He cannot remember cases in which boats were hit in Bavaria or swimmers were injured in the water.

Nevertheless, the tornado expert advises caution.

Also because waterspouts appear quite suddenly.

"You only notice it when a kind of cloud trunk arches out of the cloud," he explains, "then you can already see the splashing water." Bathers and swimmers should generally leave the area in showers and thunderstorms *.

If a "trunk of clouds" appears in the sky, action should be taken quickly.

The expert also warns that the risk of tornados is particularly great now in late summer.

The water temperature is then at its highest.

There is then a particularly large temperature difference between the water layer and the clouds.

Bavaria: tornadoes at Tegernsee, Chiemsee or Starnberger See possible?

Friedrich cannot confirm that weather phenomena such as waterspouts have increased recently - for example due to changes in the climate.

"There are actually such cases to be observed every year," he says, "I don't know anything about an accumulation so far."

Bavarian bathers are generally not at risk despite the high density of the lake.

In Germany, tornadoes over the water would mainly occur on the North and Baltic Sea coasts, says Friedrich.
