Tomala crossed the line in a time of 3:50:08 hours, and was left stunned after moving only during the year from 20km to 50km.
"This year has changed everything for me. I won a gold medal in only the second competition. It's crazy, isn't it?"
The silver medal went to German Jonathan Hilbert with 3:50:44 hours, Canadian Owen Danfrey finished third with a new personal best of 3:50:59 hours.
And what about the Spanish Jose Angelia Garcia, who participated in his eighth Olympics?
