Bales, who retired from several competitions due to personal difficulties, eventually managed to return to the competition and won a personal bronze medal alongside the team silver medal.
Her partner, football player Jonathan Evans, watched what was happening from his team's training camp, Houston Texans, and found it difficult to cope with the pressure.
"It made me nauseous," he said.
"She was in a not-so-simple place when things did not go. When you're used to everything going well for so long and suddenly having difficulty with your ability, you may come down on your own and lose confidence. I tried to make her stay positive. It's hard for me to understand what she went through because I did not. Standing on this stage and dealing with these pressures, so I mostly tried to understand her heart. "
Evans added: "I saw her face, read her lips and knew what she was going through and what she was saying to her coaches. I really hoped she would get over it and get back into the competition. I was so proud she was able to overcome these mental issues. I'm happy for her."
