This may well be the last trial in which a German is tried for crimes committed during the National Socialist era. Accused of aiding and abetting murder, a former guard at the Sachsenhausen camp will appear from October. The Neuruppin prosecutor's office hesitated for a long time before returning the accused, whose name was not communicated, to the assizes. The medical expertise ended up concluding that the 100-year-old man was able to follow the hearings,
"from two to two and a half hours a day"
. The indictment specifies the charges against him: the man is accused of having
"knowingly and willfully"
participated between 1942 and 1945 in the murder of 3,518 detainees, including
"the shooting of Soviet prisoners of war"
or the murder of several detainees
"by the use of the poisonous gas Zyklon B"
.
