"We are beginning to see a fourth wave (of covid-19) knocking on the doors of hospitals," French government spokesman Gabriel Attal told CNN affiliate BFMTV.

This was expressed during a visit this Friday to a hospital in the southern region of the country.

Attal noted a "very significant increase in the number of people admitted to hospital and ICUs" in the area.

This covers six administrative regions in the extreme southeast of mainland France, including popular tourist destinations along the Côte d'Azur.

In addition, Attal added that in the southern region of France the incidence rate of covid-19 has multiplied by 11 in one month.

In this way, it has bequeathed almost 600 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

The epidemic continues to circulate strongly, ”Attal said.

At the national level, the number of new daily cases has remained relatively stable over the last fortnight, with a small continuous increase.

With his cabinet on vacation, French President Emmanuel Macron spread a series of Christmas video calls on social media for French citizens to get vaccinated.

Dressed in a polo shirt and wandering around a house, a stark contrast to much of the president's previous public health messages during the pandemic, he urged greater acceptance of vaccines.
