The pro-Iranian Hezbollah militia on Friday fired more than a dozen rockets at Israeli-controlled territory on the Lebanese border. The Israeli army, which claimed to have intercepted most of the projectiles, immediately responded with artillery volleys at launching positions in the neighboring country. The escalation in the conflictive Blue Line of Separation marks its third consecutive day of armed incidents, with Israeli airstrikes unprecedented since the open war the two sides fought 15 years ago. It also coincides with the inauguration of the ultra-conservative Ebrahim Raisí as president of Iran and the growing tension in Gulf waters after the drone attack on an oil tanker operated by an Israeli company that caused the death of two crew members.

Hezbollah assumed responsibility with unusual speed for the rocket fire from al Al Arqub, in southern Lebanon, which fell on the mountainous and forested area of the Sheba Farms, a section of the Golan Heights (Syrian territory occupied by Israel since 1967) that the Government of Beirut claims as its own.

The party-Shiite militia said it had acted in response to the aerial bombardment launched by Israel on the ramps in Lebanese territory on Thursday, from where the Palestinian Islamic Jihad militia had fired three rockets on Wednesday on Israeli territory.

The incessant dynamics of action and reaction threaten to force an uncontrolled military escalation, such as that of the so-called Second Lebanon War in Israel, in which 1,300 Lebanese and 165 Israelis died during 33 days of fighting in the summer. When the weapons fell silent, 10,800 UN peacekeepers from 40 countries, including some 600 Spaniards, were deployed on the border.

After activating the Iron Dome anti-missile shield and replying with artillery fire, Israel has convened an emergency Cabinet composed of Prime Minister Naftali Bennett; the Minister of Defense, Benny Gantz, and the Chief of the General Staff, Aviv Kochavi, together with the main people in charge of national security. The Defense Minister acknowledged on Thursday that launching an attack against Iran is not ruled out "since it represents a regional and international problem, and it can act against anyone", referring to the attack on the oil tanker managed by an Israeli shipping company in Omani waters. An Iranian diplomatic spokesman has now replied from Tehran: "It is better not to be tested, any stupid act will have a strong response."

The southern border region of Lebanon is under the control of Hezbollah, Iran's main ally.

The United Nations Interim Force for Lebanon (UNIFIL), deployed on the troubled border, has urged both parties to exercise maximum restraint and avoid escalation.

Spain has deployed its contingent of blue helmets in the Marjayún area, a few kilometers from the Sheba farms.

In January 2015, an artillery shell fired by an Israeli battery from that disputed enclave during a confrontation with Hezbollah claimed the life of Spanish corporal Javier Soria Toledo.

His family received compensation of 200,000 euros from the State of Israel.
