Former Houston Astros pitcher JR Richard has died at age 71, according to a team statement Thursday.
"Today is a sad day for the Houston Astros as we mourn the loss of one of the icons of our franchise," the Astros said.
A Hall of Famer member of the club, Richard's 10-year career with the Astros was cut short by a stroke in July 1980.
"JR will always be remembered as an intimidating figure on the mound and as one of the best pitchers in the club. He stood shoulder to shoulder with club icons Larry Dierker, Joe Niekro and Nolan Ryan, to form some of the best rotations in history. of the club, "said the team.
"Unfortunately, his playing career was cut short by health problems, but his 10 years in the Astros uniform stands out as a decade of excellence."
In 1969, Richard was selected second overall by the Astros in the Major League Baseball Draft.
Richard, known for his fast fastball, was 107-71 in his career, and his 3.15 ERA is tied for second on the Astros all-time list.
"I have great memories of JR. He was one of the best Astros of all time. When he was pitching, we knew we were going to get a 'W'."
I didn't take too many hits in the outfield when he pitched because he was so dominant.
He was a great friend and a great teammate, "said his former teammate José Cruz.
"We send our deepest condolences to JR's wife, Lula, his family, friends and countless fans and admirers," the Astros statement said.
