The Zaldívar Law enters into force in Mexico (June) 1:12
(CNN Spanish) -
Arturo Zaldívar, presiding minister of the Supreme Court of Justice of Mexico, desisted from extending his mandate for two more years.
This extension had been proposed by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and approved in the Mexican Congress last April.
At a press conference, Minister Zaldívar said that he wants to end his term on December 31, 2022. In this way, he will complete the period for which he was elected in 2019. He said that he has already made his decision, regardless of what the court decides .
Arturo Zaldívar's position comes in the midst of a process for the ministers that make up the Supreme Court of Justice of Mexico to analyze whether or not the judicial reform approved by the Mexican Congress was pertinent to renew the person who occupies it for two more years. the Presidency of the Supreme Court.
This Friday, from Los Cabos, Baja California Sur, President López Obrador said that he saw it unlikely that Zaldívar would extend his mandate as head of the country's highest court.
He attributed it to the fact that his own colleagues "do not want him" because they come from the "old judicial regime".
