Nine people were injured in a knife attack on a train in Tokyo.

As the television broadcaster NHK reported, citing the emergency services, a woman suffered serious back injuries in the incident on a commuter train in the west of the Japanese capital.

The perpetrator initially fled, but was later arrested, according to media reports.

Initially, there was talk of four injured by the incident.

The train operator stated on its website that some connections had been interrupted due to an "attack in a car".

A knife and a cell phone, which allegedly belonged to the perpetrator, were seized on the train.

According to Japanese media reports, the suspect is a man between the ages of 20 and 30.

He is said to have fled at first, but then revealed himself to be responsible for the knife attack in a department store.

Accordingly, he was taken into custody by the police.

Such acts of violence are extremely rare in Japan.

The security forces in the capital Tokyo are on high alert because of the current Olympic Games.
