Heavy rain and hail caused serious damage in Weyarn.

Now the local council has decided to take measures to better protect the place in the future.

Weyarn

- The short cell phone films that Weyarn's Mayor Leonhard Wöhr (CSU) showed were frightening: more than ten meters wide flash floods over meadows, water that gushes from gullies and a toilet, and finally the main road through Weyarn: a huge stream , like a raging, flooding river.

The storm on Monday last week hit Weyarn badly.

"It was the strongest flash flood in decades, and then combined with hail that closed all the passages," said Wöhr.

For a short time he had put the topic on the agenda of the last meeting of the local council before the summer break.

Not to take stock, but to discuss with the local councils as quickly as possible how to deal with this threat.

Sewage pumps due to heavy rain shortly before collapse

The films had already made it clear that it was a threat.

Wöhr further described that from Gotzing to Großseeham a line was drawn through the community, where "pigeon-egg-sized hailstones" came down, some homeowners got hit twice, "flooded the cellar and smashed the roof".

At the Fritzmeier company, the fire brigade was just able to prevent damage worth millions in the machine halls.

The Weyarn sewer system was on the verge of collapse after residents lifted manhole covers to drain the water.

An “outstandingly unsuitable problem solution,” said Wöhr.

Weyarn's wastewater is pumped into the sewage treatment plant in Feldkirchen-Westerham.

However, these pumps cannot handle masses of water.

The result: the power supply almost collapsed.

After the heavy rain day, Wöhr sat down with the commanders of the fire brigades and looked at some problem areas with employees of the Rosenheim water management office.

The administration submitted two concrete proposals from these meetings to the municipal council.

As an immediate measure, the purchase of generator sets and high-performance pumps and, as a basis for further steps, the application for inclusion in a Bavarian special funding program against flash floods.

With this, an expert opinion and possible measures are subsidized.

Up to 200,000 euros are eligible for funding.

The municipalities have to finance around 25 percent themselves.

Without external support, you won't get any further in this matter, said Wöhr.

“In my own house I don't have the resources or the expertise.” He also emphasized that the community needs evacuation plans.

“We know where water runs into the cellar.

But we don't know where it can be life-threatening and where we citizens have to put them in the gym. ”In the following debate it quickly became apparent that the municipal councils don't just wait and see, but want to act as quickly as possible.

The question was also whether the district is doing something about the heavy rain and has reports drawn up.

City council calls for expert opinion

Several of the mandate holders affirmed that an expert opinion is necessary in any case. Florian Holzmann (CSU) said that if the report prioritizes measures, one must also be able to argue this prioritization vis-à-vis the population. "We have to start planning as quickly as possible," said Franz Demmelmeier (SPD). Just like Martin Fertl (UWG Goldenes Tal), he called for an immediate vote. This ultimately turned out to be in favor of the application for admission to the funding program. At the same time, Wöhr will find out from the district whether something is planned at a higher level. The community also wants to equip its fire brigades with two generators and five high-performance pumps. Cost: around 16,000 euros.
