Massive fires in Greece extended for the eleventh consecutive day, destroying forests and homes, causing mass evacuations.
According to Agence France-Presse, more than 1,450 Greek firefighters, with the help of reinforcements from other countries, continued their fierce battle to put out five major fires on the island of Evia, 200 km east of Athens, and three fires in the Peloponnese in the west of the country.
In the north of Athens, the fires continued to advance strongly to the east and Lake Marathon, the largest water reservoir in the capital, after causing the evacuation of dozens of towns.
The fires sent thick clouds and a pungent odor over Athens at night, with strong winds expected during the day.
The highway connecting the capital and the north of the country remained closed as a precaution, while the nearby migrant camps were evacuated.
In addition, the police arrested two people on charges of deliberately setting fire to the Krioneri area, where houses and shops were set on fire.
Meanwhile, evacuations are continuing, as more than 3,100 people were evacuated by boat overnight from the coastal village of Lamni, which was besieged by fire on the island of Evia.
People were also evacuated this morning from Rovis Beach on this vast island in the east of the country.
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis pledged from the Athens Fire Brigade headquarters this morning to quickly repair the damage caused by the fires, vowing that the burned areas will be given priority in reforestation.
