It is a desperate escape across the water - from the flames: More than 1,300 people were brought to safety by ferry from the Greek island of Evia during the night.
Euboea is located east of Athens and is the second largest Greek island.
Since the beginning of the week, the fire had eaten its way through the pine forests and reached the sea.
Authorities speak of the largest disaster on the island in 50 years.
And elsewhere, too, the forest fires continue to rage for the fifth day in a row.
North of Athens, the fire spread eastward on Saturday to Marathon Lake, the capital's largest water reservoir.
Greece is suffering from one of the biggest heat waves in more than 30 years.
Temperatures of over 40 degrees Celsius were reached throughout the week.
In total, the authorities had to fight 154 forest fires across the country on Friday.
More than 700 firefighters were on duty.
The Greek Prime Minister promised rapid help on Saturday morning.
“I want to assure everyone involved that they are my top priority.
We will reforest the land and protect ourselves better from floods and fires in the future. "
Firefighters hope the wind will ease on Saturday so the fires can be contained.
