The Supreme Electoral Council of Nicaragua withdrew this Friday the legal status of the opposition Citizens for Freedom Party (CXL), which becomes the third Nicaraguan political organization disabled by the government to participate in the general elections of the next November.

According to the resolution, the president of CXL, Carmella María Rogers Amburn, irregularly carried out her application process for a citizenship card, which undermines the legality of her actions within the political group.

The body also accuses the party of incurring in alleged acts that undermine the Independence, sovereignty and self-determination of the Nicaraguan people, as provided in Law 1055.

Due to these alleged irregularities, the magistrates resolved: "To cancel the identity card in the name of Carmella María Rogers Amburn, instructing the general direction of identification to proceed with the corresponding administrative procedures, for the purposes of cancellation."

Likewise, they order "to cancel the legal personality of the Citizens for Freedom Party, CXL, instructing the direction of attention to political parties, so that they proceed with the corresponding administrative procedures, for the effects of this cancellation."

The Communication team of the Citizens for Freedom Party told CNN that they will issue a statement with the official position of the political group.

On its Facebook page, CXL reported on the Council's resolution against it and on the cancellation of the ID of its president, Kitty Monterrey.

"The actions of the regime show how much they fear the electoral route," the party said through its Facebook page.

Earlier this Friday, the legal representative and president of the Constitutional Liberal Party (PLC), María Haydée Ozuna, had filed two complaints against the Citizens for Freedom Party before the Supreme Electoral Council.

According to the complaint from the PLC, the National President of CXL, Carmella María Rogers Amburn, known as Kitty Monterrey, has dual nationality, American and Nicaraguan.

"In notorious violation of the provisions of article 49, numeral 6 of the Electoral Law, the full text of which was published in the Gazette, Official Gazette 82 of May 6 of the current; therefore, everything acted upon by the CXL party, "says the letter from the PLC.

The Blue and White National Unity expressed, through a statement, that these types of actions evidence and reinforce the illegitimacy of the electoral process in the country, which they consider “totally rigged and co-opted by the regime in which there are no minimum guarantees to respect and fulfill the will of the citizens ".

The cancellation of the Citizens for Freedom Party occurs a few hours after the Public Ministry accused the vice-presidential candidate of that party, Berenice Xuyamí Quezada, of alleged "acts that promote and incite hatred and violence."

Said actions, according to the prosecution, "fit with the criminal offense of provocation, proposition and conspiracy to commit terrorist acts typified in article 398 of the penal code."

The Public Ministry also reported that a preliminary hearing was held, in which the authority admitted the cause and determined that the process be released.

The prosecution does not specify whether Quezada is under house arrest.

Third political party canceled

The CXL is the third political party canceled by the electoral power, with only 3 months remaining for the elections scheduled for November.

The first to be canceled on May 19 was the Democratic Restoration Party (PRD), which was vetoed on the grounds that a group of evangelical pastors presented a challenge to the electoral council because their directors had signed an alliance agreement with organizations of the National Coalition in violation of Christian statutes and principles.

  • Daniel Ortega's brother asks to release presidential candidates

The legal representative of the PRD, Reverend Saturnino Cerrato, said that those who presented the complaint were not members of his party, but members of Peace Communities of the Sandinista Front and that it was a political move to remove them from the elections.

The appeal for reconsideration was rejected by the Supreme Electoral Council, Cerrato informed CNN.

In less than 24 hours, the Electoral Council also disqualified the Conservative Party because, according to its president, Alfredo César, they had announced that they would not participate in the process.
