Poveglia
is a small island located between Venice and Lido, in northern Italy.
A small canal divides it into two parts and the Venetians themselves popularly know it as
"the island of ghosts"
or the "island of no return".
It is that its
macabre past
forever marked the history of a place that was used for all kinds of atrocities.
Its dark past gained popularity again with the recent visit of two Britons who toured this small former city that today
looks empty at 345 meters long and 335 meters wide.
The tourists shared a video that went viral on social networks in which the route through the abandoned streets is shown.
The images also show the decaying abandoned buildings, a massive cemetery, and items, including old beds and bathrooms.
And the men are seen sneaking through the corridors of
a former mental hospital
, where horrible experiments, including lobotomies, were allegedly carried out in the 1920s.
Abandoned and invaded by nature.

Life on this time-forgotten island began to turn dark when it was designated as an isolation and quarantine station for people affected by the Black Death.
In the fourteenth century, Europe suffered a great plague of bubonic plague
, with Venice being a great source of infection due to trade routes.
This disease ended up with just over a third of the world's population.
Death lurked around every corner and many European cities found it difficult to store such a large number of corpses.
It is located in northern Italy, very close to Venice.

That was when the island of Poveglia was seen with different eyes.
According to legend, anyone who showed the slightest symptom of the Black Death was obligatorily sent to the island.
It was also used as a mass cemetery where
some 160,000 victims
are believed to have been burned
to stop the spread of the disease.
The island maintained the functions of a maritime quarantine station during the 19th century and until the second post-war period.
Subsequently, the buildings were used in part as a geriatric convalescent home, but since 1968 this use was also abandoned and the island was given over to the state.
In the 14th century, Europe suffered a great plague of bubonic plague.

Since that time,
there have been several recovery projects on
the island
so that life can grow back on that island with a sinister past, but they have never been implemented.
Matt Nadin
, a 40-year-old salesman from Sheffield, Great Britain, posted the images on his You Tube channel,
Finders Beepers History Seeker
s, exploring abandoned and historic landmarks with his partner
Andy Thompson.
(54) .
In their viral tour they also related some of the island's myths.
Like the doctor who participated in experiments in the hospital and after going crazy committed suicide by throwing himself from the bell tower.
There were several projects to recover it but they did not prosper.

On their expedition through the abandoned city they found several large containers that they estimate may have been used to burn corpses.
"It was really, unsettling.
You could tell that even the taxi driver who accompanied us was scared, not only that the police might show up but the place itself. We couldn't get away fast enough if something happened. The island is so full of dark history and macabre, a lot of people died there and really when you are there you get an idea of the horrors that happened while walking its streets, "Matt told the British press.
"It was really, unsettling," Matt recounted.

The tour is shocking because you see sinister things:
"They burned all the bodies and left them where lying around.
The island has never been properly cleared or anything like that, so everything looks as if they just left it there."
According to the men, once the plague took hold of the city, the island
"became a madhouse."
People who were transferred there as a sort of isolation camp to be quarantined and separated from society were used as "guinea pigs" to do experiments on them.
"Horrible, horrible things," adds the youtuber.
The beauty of the island cannot be imposed on its dark past.

On his visit to the hospital, he stated: "
While we were there we heard the sound of a bell and that was quite creepy
, that really scared me a bit. It was like an omen or something. The whole place was really weird and creepy, though. you could see from the tiles and arches that it would have originally been a beautiful building. "
"You could see that hardly anyone had set foot there for years."

Somehow this island has similarities to Chernobyl:
"You could see that hardly anyone had set foot there for years
because there is no graffiti or anything, everything is natural decay. Nature has really taken over and it was really typical of a movie of terror with all the creepers. "
Poveglia was also used as a great madhouse.

"Definitely an experience that
I won't quickly forget
," the man completed.
