Poland partially gives in in the dispute with Brussels over its controversial judicial reform.

"We will abolish the disciplinary chamber of the Supreme Court in its current form - and with it the subject of the dispute with the EU will also disappear," said the deputy prime minister and head of the conservative ruling party PiS, Jaroslaw Kaczynski, the PAP news agency.

The right-wing nationalist PiS set up the disciplinary chamber in 2018;

it caused violent controversy with Brussels.

The chamber can impose penalties on insubordinate judges up to and including a professional ban.

Immediately after the 2015 election victory, Kaczyński brought the Polish constitutional tribunal under control - and thus triggered weeks of mass protests.

Kaczyński also subordinated the judges' appointment body to the parliamentary majority controlled by him.
