One expert is certain that the urban SUVs will not decrease.

Even with poor development, they will dominate the streetscape - in a few years.

Duisburg / Frankfurt - Boris Palmer, “enfant terrible” of the Greens, especially wants to ask SUV drivers to pay more.

The mayor of Tübingen turned motorists against him with his new initiative - but could count on sympathy.

Few cars are scolded as much in the city as the off-road vehicles.

At the same time, however, few cars are so popular with buyers.

The expert Ferdinand Dudenhöffer even expects a further advance of the heavy mobiles.

SUVs and related car shapes achieved a record market share of almost 35 percent in Germany in the first half of the year, making them by far the most popular body shape, according to Dudenhöffer, interpreting the registration figures from the Federal Motor Transport Authority.

SUV boom in Germany: more than 120 new models on the market

This is by no means the top, said the head of the private CAR Institute in Duisburg.

Even if the growth rates for this vehicle type halved over the past ten years, the market share will increase to around 45 percent by 2026.

Another contributing factor is that more and more models in the small and compact class are also being offered as SUVs and that diesel engines are becoming less important.

There are currently more than 120 models to choose from on the new car market, eleven of which are fully electric.

SUV sales in Germany: Volvo, Mazda and VW subsidiary Seat in front

Dudenhöffer referred to current SUV market shares in Sweden and Switzerland, where SUVs dominate even more with 47.2 and 45.7.

In the USA, almost 51 percent of cars are sold as SUVs.

In addition to the classic off-road brands such as Jeep and Land Rover, other manufacturers also increased their SUV shares.

Volvo already sells 77 percent of the cars in Germany as SUVs, Mazda 62 percent and the VW subsidiary Seat 56 percent. With SUV shares around a third, the big German brands are exactly in line with the market. (
