Poverty in Mexico reached 43.9% in 2020, according to data from the National Council for the Evaluation of Social Development Policy (Coneval), an autonomous public body that measures poverty in Mexico. The figures were not to the liking of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who highlighted the importance of the social plans established by his government in the midst of the pandemic and said he had "another way to measure" poverty. In Aristegui, John Scott Andretta and Guillermo Cejudo Ramírez, two of the Coneval researchers, tell us about the study's findings. More Mexicans are in poverty due to the "brutal effect" of the pandemic on household income; because historically various social sectors have been ignored; and by decisions of governments that have caused deficiencies to citizens, such as the deterioration of health services, according to the Coneval report.
