Pas-de-Calais: a young woman seriously burned after climbing onto the roof of a train at Saint-Omer station

The victim was severely electrocuted and thrown onto the tracks. The 18-year-old victim's vital prognosis is engaged.


The drama took place on the night of Saturday to Sunday August 8, around 4 a.m., a few dozen meters from Saint-Omer station (Pas-de-Calais).

Accompanied by several friends, a young woman began to climb on the roof of a stationary tank wagon and received an electric arc, due to the catenaries which overhang the trains and which are highly charged with electricity - approximately 25,000 volts.

The victim was severely electrocuted and thrown onto the tracks.

She is badly burned.

The emergency services were immediately alerted by the friends of the 18-year-old young woman.

Very quickly dispatched on the spot, the firefighters of Saint-Omer accompanied by the SMUR of Helfaut took care of the young woman in a state of absolute emergency.

Its vital prognosis is engaged.

She is said to be suffering from significant brain damage.

First transported to the hospital in Helfaut, it was then helicoptered to be taken care of at the University Hospital of Louvain, in Belgium.

A friend of the victim, who witnessed the accident, told

La Voix du Nord that

she saw flames and even received embers where her friend was lying on the tracks.

The latter immediately understood that the young woman was very badly burned.

A police investigation was also opened to shed light on the tragedy.
