2021-08-09T22:32:41.888Z

The travelers, among whom 63 minors were reported, were in the vehicle less than 200 kilometers from the border with the United States

141 Central American migrants were found in a box on a trailer early Monday in the municipality of Juárez, in the state of Nuevo León, less than 200 kilometers from the Mexican border with the United States.

According to local authorities, the undocumented group comes from Nicaragua, Honduras and El Salvador and at least 63 migrants were minors.

The discovery occurred after the report of the presence of a cargo vehicle in the central area of the municipality.

While checking the parked trailer, officers began to hear voices coming from inside.

When they opened the trailer, they observed more than a hundred men, women and children.

The local media detailed that near the site of the discovery, in an open field, remains of food and clothing that allegedly belonged to this group of migrants were found.

At the time the immigrants were discovered, two people who claimed to be the owners of the vehicle were also arrested.

The men were transferred to the local Public Prosecutor's Office for their probable responsibility in the illegal transfer of migrants.

This new finding shows that the migration crisis continues despite the efforts of Mexico and the United States to stop migrants in their attempt to cross the border.

During the first seven months of the year, the Mexican government received a record number of 64,378 asylum applications from migrants, according to statistics from the Mexican Commission for Refugee Assistance (Comar).

Far from decreasing, the number of applicants has reached unprecedented levels in 2021. In July alone, 12,800 asylum applications were exceeded, the highest monthly figure that the agency has registered.

La Comar reports that the main origin of the applicants is Honduras, with 26,557 registrations, followed by Haiti with 13,255, Cuba with 6,446, El Salvador with 4,402 and Venezuela added 3,558 requests in July of this year.

The record numbers of arrests and asylum requests in Mexico by migrants are replicated on the other side of the border.

The United States has recorded 1.2 million arrests of illegal immigrants since the start of fiscal year 2021, last October.

Even with three months to go before the end of the period, the year has already broken the million mark, which had not been exceeded in 15 years.

June has contributed abundantly to this account.

The immigration authorities made more than 188,000 arrests last month, an increase of 4.5% compared to May.
