An Australian army soldier suffered serious head and chest injuries when attacked by a crocodile on Friday afternoon, local media reported.

A colleague who came to his rescue in far north Queensland was also injured.

Australian media said the two soldiers were swimming near a coastal fishing village on the Cape York peninsula, about 800 kilometers north of Cairns, when they were attacked.

The Royal Flying Doctor Service air ambulance service reported on Twitter that it had transferred the men to a hospital in Cairns, and the media reported that they were both in stable condition.

"Two men have been swimming in crocodile-infested waters. One was attacked and the other tried to help," the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) said, citing Lockhart River Aboriginal community mayor Wayne Butcher.

The soldier who came to the aid of his colleague suffered arm and wrist injuries, according to the media.

It was not immediately clear what happened to the crocodile.

The defense department told ABC that both men are military personnel, but did not say whether they were on duty when the attack occurred.

The Queensland Department of the Environment will further investigate the incident, and a team of wildlife agents moved into the remote area late on Saturday.

According to data from the government of the Northern Territory, the state with the largest number of crocodiles in Australia, there are between 100,000 and 200,000 saltwater crocodiles, native to northern Australia, living freely in the country.
