Canada reopens to American tourists: the guide to crossing the border

The Government of Canada has banned Americans from taking nonessential travel there since March 2020, due to the covid-19 pandemic.

But that will change this Monday, August 9, when it opens its borders once again to the pleasure trips of its southern neighbors.


In a press release, issued on July 19, the Public Health Agency of Canada said that the relaxation of these restrictions occurs due to "increased vaccination rates and decreased covid-19 cases."

As of August 7, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) placed Canada at "Level 3: High" for covid-19.

Level 4 is the highest warning.

Who will be eligible for nonessential travel to Canada starting Monday?

Answer: US Citizens and Permanent Residents who are currently residing in the United States, traveling from the United States, and have been fully vaccinated at least 14 days prior to entering Canada, will be allowed entry for non-essential travel.

To be considered fully vaccinated, travelers must have received the full series of a COVID-19 vaccine, or a combination of vaccines, accepted by the Government of Canada at least 14 days before entering that country.

Fully vaccinated Americans can also enter Canada at various land border crossings.

What are the entry requirements?

Answer: Fully vaccinated travelers must submit covid-19 information electronically to ArriveCAN, the official Canadian Government request that it uses to provide mandatory travel information when entering Canada.

You must register within 72 hours prior to arrival.

Travelers without a smartphone can submit the information to Canada.ca/ArriveCAN and print the receipt.

Travelers must also meet the pre-entry testing requirements.

All travelers 5 years of age and older must show proof of a negative ccovid-19 molecular test result taken within 72 hours prior to arrival in Canada or show proof of a positive covid-19 molecular test taken between 14 and 180 days, from August 9, before your arrival.
