Covid-19 in Latin America: This is how vaccination is going in the countries of the region

This is how vaccination goes in some of the Latin American countries, with at least one dose of the vaccine against covid-19.

Vaccination rates worldwide continue to advance, but the world average remains relatively low: 29.9% of the world population is vaccinated at least partially against covid-19, and only 15, 4% are fully vaccinated.

The news improves in the American continent: 50.01% of the population in North America, on average, and 45.52% in South America, on average, have at least one dose of the vaccine.

For comparison, the vaccination rates of Uruguay and Chile exceed those of Canada, 72.01%, Spain, 70.88%, and the United States, 58.20%.

Argentina, Panama, Ecuador, the Dominican Republic, Brazil and Costa Rica, for example, are ahead of the European average, which is 50.18% of the population partially vaccinated.

El Salvador, Cuba, Mexico and Colombia have vaccinated more people with at least one dose than Australia, 35.32%, and New Zealand, 25.95%.

However, with the delta and lambda variants spreading rapidly around the world, Latin American governments continue to struggle to contain contagion rates.

Mexico

On Sunday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mexico reported that it will reduce the issuance of passports to 30% in those states of the country that have epidemiological traffic lights in red due to the increase in cases of covid-19.

The measure aims to preserve the health of passport applicants and employees.

Guatemala

On Saturday, the Guatemalan Ministry of Health reported that the positivity rate in cases of covid-19 is 33%.

In addition, the Vice Minister of Hospitals, Francisco Coma, warned that all hospitals in the public and private network have an occupation of 95% to 100% in care for moderate and severe patients.

"We have already reached the level of the total number of hospital beds in the country: here I am talking about temporary hospitals and I am also talking about hospitals in the national network, having a 95% occupancy in seriously ill patients, and above 80% in those moderate patients, "Coma said.

Panama

Panamanian authorities have already detected the delta variant of the coronavirus in the country, according to Health Minister Luis Francisco Sucre.

A minor under the age of 14, residing in the province of Chiriquí, on the border with Costa Rica, would be the first community case detected.

The Colombian Ministry of Health explained in its Twitter account that those who were vaccinated against covid-19 abroad must report it in the Mi Vacuna web application and in their EPS.

Those people who received only the first dose abroad and expect to receive the second dose in Colombia, may be vaccinated in the country, they should only "be prioritized in the stages that are open in the National Vaccination Plan."
