Apple TV +
returns recharged with one of the series that gave him the greatest satisfaction:
Ted Lasso
.
Fiction –of the few that exist with a football theme– not only managed to be among the favorites of the platform's audience, but with its first year it accumulated
20 Emmy Award nominations
.
On September 19, it will be known how many statuettes they will be left with.
Now, this streaming service launched the
second season with another 12 chapters
that are released every Friday (at the moment only the first four are available).
To introduce ourselves to the world of the series, we must refer to 2013, when
an NBC Sports Premier League campaign
created the character Ted Lasso (played by
Jason Sudeikis
):
an American football coach who came to Europe to lead a team of football
.
That idea would become, years later, the premise for the creation of
a series focused on this character at the helm of AFC Richmond
, a team that has passed into the hands of Rebecca Welton (
Hannah Waddingham
), after separating from her husband.
Rebeca's plan is to
join Ted as DT to derail the club that her ex-husband loves so much,
but his arrival as team leader will change everyone's life for the better.
Optimism will be the main engine of the series

Ted Lasso: the rise of a streaming hit
Ted Lasso
became, with just one season,
a series praised by critics
. Despite not being popular like its competitors, it garnered 20 Emmy nominations,
beating out shows like
Lovecraft Country
and
Lady's Gambit
(which scored 18) and fighting closely with
The Crown
and
The Mandalorian
(each with 24),
WandaVision
(23). ) and
The Handmaid's Tale
and
Saturday Night Live
(21).
Clarín spoke exclusively with Jason Sudeikis and the cast of the series
to analyze the phenomenon that caused this fiction and
how the shower of nominations occurred
: beyond the protagonist, actors Brett Goldstein, Brendan Hunt will seek the Emmy for best supporting performance , Nick Mohammed and Jeremy Swift;
as well as actresses Juno Temple and Hannah Waddingham.
Virtually the entire cast
.
Jason Sudeikis assured Clarín that he crossed his fingers for a third season of Ted Lasso.
In turn, Sudeikis, who has already won the Golden Globe,
now aspires to win the award for best leading actor and another for screenwriter
.
"
We started with the scripts for the second season in May 2020
, so it was written during the quarantine. I remember at that time we said:
'It will be only seven weeks of lockdown and that's it,'
" Sudeikis recalls with a laugh.
"Everything happened before the show premiered in mid-August 2020 and, when the series broke with market schemes,
we already knew what the story of the second part was going to be
. That's why nothing really changed based on the reception of the public. We got to tell the story we wanted and now
we cross our fingers for the third season,
"he adds.
In April, Jason Sudeikis won the Screen Actors Guild Awards as a male actor for his performance in Ted Lasso.
"
It is impossible to know what is going to work, but this worked,
" says Sudeikis and attributes part of the success to the fact that
the series goes beyond what happens on soccer fields
and that it is interesting how it reflects egos in elite competition , the pressure of social media, love breakups, midlife crises and culture clashes between British and Americans.
"Receiving messages from parents and children who watch the series together means a lot to us, but
we could never have foreseen this,
" adds the actor.
For her part,
Hannah Waddingham
, who plays Rebecca, the owner of the club, highlights that the show helps, on its scale, to make a better world.
"Juno (Temple) and I said the other day that bigger than any nomination, bigger than any criticism, was when we heard from a mother who had decided not to wait until her daughter was older to show her the series."
Hannah Waddingham plays Rebecca Welton, a woman left in charge of AFC Richmond following her husband's divorce.
The actress remembers that that mother "did not care about the swear words that may appear, or anything like that. She wanted to show him how women can support each other, how women should relate to each other and how to step up to let the another breakthrough. "
The role of women is very important as the episodes go by,
both in the first and in the second season.
For his part,
Brett Goldstein
, the comedian who plays veteran striker Roy Kent, points out that for him, the impact of the program is due to the proposition of "a rarity in current fiction and is something that the public needed."
Brett Goldstein plays a veteran player who begins to see the twilight of his career.
"
All of these accolades are great,
but it also makes me think about how hungry we were as viewers to see characters who treat others kindly, who listen to each other, are non-judgmental and empathetic," he notes, adding: "What The more I am proud of the show is in the scripts.
All characters are treated fairly, even if they are assholes
. "
Actress Juno Temple agrees with this same position: "
I think people needed a positive outlook already before the pandemic
, for quite some time. The pandemic definitely meant that, since people couldn't go out, they sat down and thought about the things more than we ever allow ourselves. "
Juno Temple personifies Keeley Jones, the wife of the club's star player who begins to enter the world of football.
