The Nicaraguan Ministry of the Interior reported this Sunday through a press release that it annulled the Nicaraguan passport of Carmella María Rogers Amburn, president of Ciudadanos por la Libertad (CxL), the opposition party to which the Power Electoral withdrew this Friday the legal status for the November elections.

They also canceled her identity card and birth certificate, "which would show that Ms. Rogers Amburn is solely a US citizen."

The Nicaraguan passport of Rogers Amburn had been made, according to the report of the Government, at the Consulate of Nicaragua in San Francisco.

According to Wendy Morales Urbina, attorney general of the Republic of Nicaragua, to the consular director general, there were "irregularities in the registration as Nicaraguan of Mrs. Rogers Amburn on June 7, 2005", for which they requested the cancellation.

The General Directorate of Migration and Immigration also resolved to annul Rogers Amburn's Nicaraguan passport, which they attribute to having obtained it fraudulently.

According to the Government, said agency indicates that "according to the 198 registered migratory movements, most of Mrs. Rogers used US passports."

For this reason, the authorities report that "Rogers Amburn's Nicaraguan passport has been annulled."

CNN has not been able to independently know the date of nationalization of Rogers Amburn.

On several occasions we have tried to communicate with her, but so far she has not responded to calls and messages.

A worker from the Citizens for Freedom party who prefers to preserve his identity for security reasons considers that Rogers is in a place of security, foreseeing any other legal measure against him.

We are also trying to find out what are the irregularities in the naturalization process that are argued by the authorities of the Attorney General's Office, where we have consulted, but we have not yet received a response.

The Citizens for Freedom Party, through its Facebook page, expressed itself in this regard this Sunday condemning "the illegal cancellation of the documents that accredit the Nicaraguan nationality" of Rogers Amburn and showing solidarity "in the face of this attack by the regime for demanding freedom and democracy. ".

What does the Constitution say?

Nicaraguan lawyer and researcher at the Pro Transparency and Anticorruption Observatory Martha Patricia Molina told CNN that the resolution on Rogers Amburn is more political than legal, since the Constitution "establishes in Article 15 that Nicaraguans can be nationals and nationalized. The specific case of Kitty Monterrey, although she was born in the United States, is national because her mother is Nicaraguan. "

Meanwhile, Article 20 of the Magna Carta establishes that no national can be deprived of his nationality, and that the quality of Nicaraguan national is not lost by acquiring another nationality, said the lawyer.

The Supreme Electoral Council canceled this Friday the legal status of the Citizens for Freedom Party, after the president of the Constitutionalist Liberal Party (PLC), María Haydeé Ozuna, presented complaints about the dual nationality of the president of CxL, a fact that according to she violates the electoral law.

The Supreme Electoral Council also justified its resolution arguing that CxL had violated Law 1055, committing actions against national sovereignty.

'The opposition has been eliminated'

The high representative of the European Union for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, expressed himself in a statement issued this Monday from Brussels on the cancellation of the legal status of the Citizens for Freedom Party.

"Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega and Vice President Rosario Murillo want to win the elections without competition," he said.

According to Borrell, this decision "crushes the prospects for a credible and legitimate electoral process. The opposition has been eliminated. Nicaraguans are being deprived of the basic human and civil right to vote in credible, inclusive and transparent elections in accordance with the Constitution. of Nicaragua and international human rights laws and norms, "said the high representative of the European Union.

This Saturday, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights expressed on its Twitter account that the cancellation of Ciudadanos por Libertad, as has already happened with two other parties, "prevents political participation."
